Marc Henry
Marc Henry’s installation features a punching bag suspended in a 360-degree vitrine. The bag is re-coded as a symbol of violence and trauma—a stand-in for bodies, systems, and structures. The vitrine renders the object transparent, invisible, and yet hyper-visible, challenging the viewer’s perception of violence and its representation.
Referencing Paul Virilio’s “The Vision Machine,” Henry explores the politics of visibility. The punching bag becomes a proxy for the body, a site of impact and projection. The installation asks: what does it mean to witness violence? To be its target? To be its echo?
The vitrine’s circularity evokes surveillance, spectacle, and containment. The viewer is implicated in the loop—caught between empathy and voyeurism. Henry’s work destabilizes the gaze, making violence both seen and unseen, present and absent.
